Will he be depressed?
I have two horses, and we have to sell one of them, as he is to much trouble for me. The other one, Cajun, I love to DEATH. We have an amazing bond, and everything is perfect. It’s like a dream, the rider and horse love each other and are perfect for each other! I’m so happy. But I’m really scared that when we sell the other horse (which cajun is attached to, herd buddies) Cajun will get depressed. We will be getting another horse (I know they have to have a buddy) but I’m scared that when we sell the other horse me and Caj will not have that bond any more. That he wont love me as he does now. What if he gets depressed from not having Ivan with him? Then I fear we will have no relationship again, like we’ll have to start all over, that he wont love me or trust me again. Also, Cajun is used to being the center of my life, he’s the only one I ride, and he’s the only horse iv ever had this kind of bond with. When I start riding this new horse and giving it lots of attention, and telling HIM I love him, and giving HIM hugs, and telling Cajun that "now your not my only boy, and your not my only horsie now" will he be jelous? What will happen to the bond then? I don’t know what to do because I love him so much and I wouldn’t be able to live if our bond was broken. This is the happiest i’ve felt in a long time.
So will Cajun be depressed and our bond be hurt when we take Ivan away from him?
And will he be jelous of the new horse and not want anything to do with me anymore?

I am willing to bet that yes he will get depressed but eventually he will come out of it …especially when you get him a buddy. Let me tell you the story of my 34 year mare and her pasture mate Katie. Katie was a older horse that came to us skin and bones we took her in and instantly the old mare attached to her and they where joined at the hip. Well sadly after living with us for just under a year Katie had to be put down when she started loosing her battle with cancer. The old mare was VERY depressed she would not eat and just stood at the fence staring at Katie’s grave. Well in a last ditch effort to bring her out if it we rescued another sad skinny older horse. Within 2 days we noticed a difference in the old mare, she is always with him and is finally getting back to being fat and happy.
So in short I am betting that your other horse will be fine. In fact in the absence of his buddy he might just get more attached to you and make the bond between the 2 of you even stronger.
